What is Immunity? The body’s ability to fight and resist infections from entering the body and maintaining an optimal level of health and vitality.
Parts of the Immune system
Various cells and organs of the body work together in harmony with each other. However the chief parts include the white blood cells, lymphatic system, spleen, thymus, bone marrow and the antibodies.
Mechanics of the Immune system
When the body senses a germ/foreign substance (medically referred as antigens), the immune system identifies it and fights against it by forming antibodies. The antibodies attach themselves to the antigens, which also forms a memory for the immune system. Hence the next time when the body is exposed to the same substance again the person does not fall sick due to the presence of the already formed antibodies.
What factors affect Immunity
Age, sex, past history of infections, genetic make-up, stress level, nutritional deficiencies; are some of the factors that affect immunity and make us more prone to certain infections and diseases.
